Information Technologist - Oracle Database and System Administration
The Information Technologist will work as part of a team, managing and supporting the Oracle Database and supporting servers, as well as a VMS server cluster. Under the direction of the Manager, responsibilities include the following: provide effective and efficient support for the Vancouver Island University information systems; manage, tune and troubleshoot the Oracle Database and its integration with a wide variety of computer software applications and sub-systems in a highly complex, multi-platform and multi-operating system environment; responsible for data integrity, backup and restoration of institutional data in production and disaster recovery situations; plan for the evolution of VIU information systems and evaluate technology; manage the servers running the Oracle database in production and development environments; manage the VMS server cluster environment; respond to requests for service, provide appropriate resolutions and maintain associated documentation and on-line records; create and maintain accurate and concise documentation related to the development, installation, configuration and maintenance of all supported systems; research, test and deploy solutions for a wide variety of Information Systems problems and needs; lead or be a member of teams working on small to large-scale information technology projects; and provide support for all campuses and sites including Cowichan, Parksville and Powell River.
Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
This regular, full-time appointment, located on VIU’s Nanaimo campus, will be made effective as soon as possible.
BSc Degree in computing science, or related field, from an appropriately accredited institution. Three to five years of directly related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Demonstrated strengths in Oracle Database administration and Systems Manager in a mixed OS environment ideally including Linux, VMS and Windows. Skilled in programming/scripting development, PL-SQL, Perl, sh and bash. Advanced analytical and problem solving skills on a wide variety of computing hardware and software systems. Strong working knowledge of network architecture, storage systems (fibre channel,SAN). Demonstrated success as a team member, in leadership roles and working autonomously. Strong communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to produce and maintain high quality technical documentation. Ability to conduct research, produce reports and make appropriate recommendations. Ability to work in a high-pressure environment, requiring proficiency in multitasking, prioritizing and meeting deadlines. Willingness to travel, as required, to provide support at all campuses.
Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island University policy and procedures).
Recent expertise and experience in the following: VMS systems management, DCL, TOAD, LDAP, enterprise Windows environments, Active Directory.
