Job Summary:

Software Specialist
Canadian Advanced Network For Astronomical Research
NEP-110 Project
Closing Date: December 18, 2013

The UVic Department of Physics and Astronomy is seeking a Software Specialist to work on the CANFAR NEP-110 project. This is a term position ending December 31, 2014.

The Canadian Advanced Network For Astronomical Research (CANFAR) is an operational infrastructure for the processing, storage, data management, and workflow management needs of large Canadian astronomy projects. The CANFAR infrastructure also allows astronomers to transparently access distributed cloud storage and processing resources provided by Compute Canada resources.
The CANFAR infrastructure is integrated into an environment that includes Canadian astronomers, Canadian astronomy surveys, the telescope facilities in Hawaii which observe and distribute data, the science data archives at the National Research Council's Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC); and Compute Canada. The CANFAR team consists of UVic positions, CADC staff, and a small group of university-based scientists and data specialists.

The NEP-110 project within CANFAR involves extending the capabilities of the Virtual-Machine-On-Demand services, extending the capabilities of the Group Management service and adding random access capability to the Data Management service. The Software Specialist will provide the software development expertise required to design, implement, and deploy various components of these deliverables. The Software Specialist will work primarily at the CADC (located 12 km from UVic).

Organizational Structure
The Software Specialist reports to the CANFAR Project Manager, and will be under the direct supervision of the CANFAR project Principal Investigator.

Key Activities

  • Designs and develops various software components of the CANFAR infrastructure, primarily in Java and Python. This process will include:
    • Defining and designing development tasks as a part of an agile software development team.
    • Implementing components of the CANFAR infrastructure according to story and task definitions in a given development iteration, following the implementation standards of the CANFAR project.
    • Writing unit and integration tests to exercise components.
    • Executing test plans and creating test reports.
    • Writing user and maintenance documentation as required.
  • Evaluates and recommends existing open-source software packages to be included in the CANFAR infrastructure. Based on the requirements determined for the CANFAR infrastructure, survey the available software packages, and evaluate their suitability for use in the CANFAR infrastructure.
  • Participates in the software design discussions and helps ensure the standards of the CANFAR project are met.
  • Reviews code produced by peers. The reviews help ensure code produced by peers is error free and conforms to the standards of the CANFAR project.
  • Prepare inputs to the project planning process, e.g., estimates of effort, identification of dependencies, etc.
  • As part of the agile development methodology, participates in daily stand-up meetings to discuss task status and issues.

Educational Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience Requirements
  • At least two years of recent experience in the design and development of software systems using Java and/or Python, and the Linux operating system.
  • At least two years of recent experience working as part of a small to medium-sized development team. Experience working in an agile development environment is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement complex software systems using object oriented techniques.
  • Experience designing, developing and maintaining web applications and RESTful web services is an asset.
