Ocean Networks Canada operates an innovative cabled infrastructure that supplies continuous power and Internet connectivity to various scientific instruments located in coastal and deep-ocean environments. These instruments collect, sample and produce data that is archived and managed by a Digital Infrastructure team. This team works with scientists, engineers, and other user groups around the world, to support and develop meaningful and creative uses for the data.
Ocean Networks Canada is looking for a creative and energetic individual to augment our Digital Infrastructure team in the position of junior java developer/tester. The incumbent will play an active role in the design and implementation of various software tools built by the DI software team. Software tools created by our team provide operational control for the arrays of subsea instruments that monitor ocean conditions and relay the data over the fibre optic cable to the data centre at the University of Victoria.
The primary functions and tasks of the Junior Developer include:
To be the successful candidate, you will have a university degree or college diploma in computer science and a minimum of 1 to 2 years of development experience in software development.
The ideal candidate will also possess the following experience and knowledge:
Familiarity with the Eclipse development environment and with tools such as Velocity and Hibernate would be an asset, as would be some knowledge of the messaging system.
The Developer will have the ability to make technical decisions and recommendations to users and supervisory personnel and is expected to perform duties within a team; therefore a good team spirit together with professional work practices is required.
