As part of the University of Victoria’s Accounting Services, Payroll is responsible for the accurate and timely running of all University payroll processes for both salaried and hourly paid employees, while ensuring compliance with current payroll and taxation Legislation.
Payroll is reviewing its operations to meet the demands of a highly complex and growing organization. The University has initiated a project that requires a key resource to be seconded as a subject matter expert and the existing Assistant Manager, Payroll will serve as that resource. As a result, this office has an opportunity for a highly qualified and capable payroll professional to join the team and provide backfill for the duration of the project. The anticipated term of this opportunity allows for a period of knowledge transfer to ensure that the successful applicant is in a position to climb a very steep learning curve quickly.
Reporting to the Manager, Payroll, this position is responsible for directing and coordinating day-to-day work activities of the Payroll department including oversight and mentorship of two Payroll Supervisors. As Assistant Manager, this position will ensure all aspects of payroll administration are executed in a timely and accurate manner and within the multiple Collective Agreements and Frameworks that exist at the University.
As a key member of the payroll leadership team, the Assistant Manager will participate in recruitment and staffing decisions, scheduling, and delegation of work assignments. As an experienced supervisor, this position will be skilled at managing positive staff and client relations while acting as a subject matter expert in system administration and payroll process management. Strong customer service and superior problem solving skills are key to success in this role.
This position requires a highly organized individual with the ability to set and work to priorities while meeting strict deadlines. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated background in change management, leadership and a solid foundation in payroll principles and practices. Excellent verbal and written skills with the ability to communicate information in a positive and effective manner to a diverse group of stakeholders are essential.
The successful candidate will have completed CPA – Payroll Compliance Practitioner certification plus completion of a recognized accounting certificate or diploma. Previous experience in a large unionized environment and a minimum of 5 years of leadership experience is also required. Experience with large complex Human Resource and Payroll systems preferred.
As a temporary full-time PEA employee the benefits and entitlements (including vacation sick leave, medical and extended health and dental) are found in the UVic/PEA Collective Agreement.
