UVic is developing a comprehensive Civil Engineering program. Reporting to the Program Co-ordinator of the Civil Engineering Program, this new term position will hold responsibility for planning and equipping, managing and maintaining the labs for the program.

The Lab Supervisor will serve the Civil Engineering (CIVE) program’s undergraduate, graduate and research laboratories. The laboratories will run teaching and research in materials/structural engineering, environmental engineering, transportation and geotechnical.

The Lab Supervisor will manage the Civil Engineering labs on a day-to-day basis including researching, obtaining quotes, ordering, storing, operating, and maintaining laboratory equipment, and materials. This position will also assist with the instruction of students and teaching assistants in the use of the equipment and the lab.

The Lab Supervisor will assist the Program’s faculty members on laboratory development, implementation and preparation as per the instructor’s needs which may also include assisting faculty in coordinating lab use between teaching and research activities, and supporting student extracurricular activities that require use of labs.

A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably in Civil Engineering, with 3 years related experience plus be registered or eligible to register with ASTT BC or APEG BC is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience should include designing, modifying and/or constructing laboratory apparatus setups and the operation, maintenance and calibration of highly specialized equipment. Excellent organizational and communication skills are required. Ability to manage a large volume of work, to prioritize and problem-solve in order to meet deadlines. Ability to perform detailed work accurately in a fast paced environment with constant interruptions. Proven ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently.
