Job Summary: 

We are seeking to fill a number of contractor positions, all of which provide challenging opportunities for qualified applicants with product development experience. The positions will enable you to grow your skills, knowledge, and experience as you work on interesting and innovative client projects. The primary responsibility will be to design and develop software for medical devices that meet various international regulatory standards in conformance with Starfish’s Quality Management System.

These positions will require you to communicate effectively with team members in other disciplines as well as with new and existing customers.

Your primary responsibility is the design, implementation, maintenance, and documentation of embedded software for products developed at Starfish Medical. This includes ownership of the design from the initial concept stage through to a complete release to manufacturing.

This position reports directly to the Software Engineering Manager.

As an Embedded Systems Software Engineer, your responsibilities will be to:

  • Help brainstorm, architect, and engineer complex embedded systems
  • Write software for embedded systems on various platforms
  • Implement software controls, standards, and processes
  • Set up, configure, and maintain development environments
  • Create and maintain Medical Device Design History Files
  • Develop Detailed Design Specifications and Verification Plans
  • Contribute to formal Design Reviews and Source Code Reviews
  • Collaborate with other disciplines, departments, and external development partners
  • Advance the quality and control of the medical device software development process
  • Develop software tasks and estimates for customer proposals
  • Mentor and share knowledge with others
  • Perform other related duties, as required


  • Degree or Technical Certification in Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent.
  • 5+ years experience in embedded systems design and development
  • 3+ years experience in product development
  • 2+ years experience with ARM Cortex-A, M, or R platforms
  • Strong ability to prioritize responsibilities and be highly flexible in a demanding product development environment
  • Excellent communication skills, both written, and oral


  • 3+ years experience developing in a highly-regulated industry, such as: automotive, aerospace, medical
  • 3+ years DSP and FPGA software development experience
  • Deep understanding of real-time programming concepts (pros and cons)
  • Experience developing on embedded Linux or Android platforms
  • Experience with automation and control of common biomedical technologies (ECG, ultrasonics, lasers, robotics, microscopy)
  • Experience in Fault Tolerance and Design for Testing
  • Experience with Project Management (Senior Engineers only)
