Position description

University Systems serves a diverse client base including students, faculty and world-renowned researchers. We provide computing, communications and media technology facilities in support of the university's learning, teaching, research and administrative activities. We provide support to high profile research projects like VENUS, NEPTUNE and ATLAS. Our campus voice and data networks connect our clients to each other and to colleagues around the globe. We are striving to become the best information systems organization in the Canadian university system.

Where do you fit in? As our new Operations Network Analyst in Network Services, your strong technical and people skills propel us toward the department's goal of operational efficacy. You understand the unique networking requirements of both the administrative and the academic communities. You require minimal supervision, work well under pressure, flourish within a team and can convey technical concepts in lay-terms.

What will you be doing? You are part of our team of "go to" people for network operations, on and off campus, LAN and WAN. You troubleshoot issues with 1G/10G Ethernet links over fibre and copper, as well as Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP), wireless and networking hardware and software. You work closely with departmental systems administrators and other IT support staff to ensure client needs for high performance computing & networking are met. As part of our Network Operations Centre (NOC), you collaborate with team members and peers throughout the higher-education community, enriching your career and enhancing the reputation of UVic Systems-opening up opportunities to participate as a subject matter expert at conferences, on committees and in relevant working groups (like BCNET).

Are you up for the challenge? Your qualifications likely bring a unique blend of experimentation, training, education, professional development and experience - we expect it might look something like: a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and 3 years working as a junior analyst, or, potentially, a technical diploma and a bit more "real world" experience in the field. We welcome applications demonstrating equivalent combinations.

In addition to the usual combinations, you bring with you an in-depth knowledge of TCP/IP, routing/switching protocols and telecommunications technologies; a high level of comfort with Linux and other Unix variants; and, you know that most of our network equipment is Cisco, whose products you have familiarity with (although we understand this is an asset)!

You will be comfortable with our normal business hours (7.30am to 4.30pm), understanding that system maintenance may be performed off-hours and major issues are responded to on a 24/7 basis, as tech professionals are required to do.
