Position Description

You are responsible for firmware design on deep-sea oceanographic instrumentation. Your involvement goes beyond just firmware. As part of a team of dedicated engineers, including other firmware engineers, you work closely with colleagues and contractors in the electronics, software, mechanical, and sensor design fields to ensure that the entire deliverable meets marketing, technical, costing, and timing specifications.

You are expected to learn and understand the target market’s applications and requirements. You are expected to project manage your designs to launch date expectations. You must support your designs; the Firmware Engineer is the ‘go-to-guy' for AML’s manufacturing team on all issues related to firmware. In that vein, you enjoy fixing problems and educating others.


  • Create specification documents for new board and firmware designs
  • Conceptualize design alternatives to meet approved specifications
  • Recommend preferred design options
  • Generate firmware overview documentation
  • Maintain firmware design histories and version control
  • Coordinate Engineering Change Requests and Engineering Change Orders
  • Provide ad-hoc support to Engineering and Production teams
  • Project manage the entire design and launch process
  • Educate instrument assemblers and users on firmware changes
  • Liaise with hardware designers
  • Generate and implement test plans for new board designs
  • Create and manage QC procedures

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong embedded C/C++ programming skills
  • Experience with real-time operating systems
  • Background in embedded Linux programming for real-time environments, signals, threads, processes
  • Experience with Boot loader and remote firmware updates
  • Widespread experience in real-time communications protocol stacks, client/server architecture
  • Familiarity with embedded driver development such as Ethernet, USB, CAN, SPI, UART, GPIO, I2C
  • Well versed in ARM processor architecture and tool chains
  • Experience implementing Digital Signal Processing algorithms in embedded environments
  • Understanding of and experience with the full firmware lifecycle: specification, design, implementation, integration, debugging, and maintenance
  • Ability to interpret hardware designs / schematics
  • Ability to use test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, meters, etc.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Familiarity with oceanographic applications
  • Familiarity with firmware design for data logging instrumentation or low power consumption applications
  • Familiarity with Algorithms to control / position Underwater Vehicles
  • Experience with embedded file systems
  • Working experience with:
    • Freescale MQX
    • Freescale Kinetis MCUs
    • Freescale CodeWarrior, Eclipse IDE
    • State machine / design patterns
    • Python
    • Mercurial & Bitbucket
  • Exposure to and belief in the basic principles of project management
  • General knowledge of quality control and quality assurance principles and practices
  • Exposure to the Netsuite ERP system and / or the Open Air project management system
  • Understanding of sensor calibration and curve fitting

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Software Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience in firmware design for real-time embedded systems.
