The Manager, Architecture and Planning will be directly concerned with the process of business optimization and performance management. The role is tasked with aligning organizational strategy and the planned evolution of information systems. The position will also be responsible for managing the Information Technology security practice for the University. Supported by a dedicated analyst, the position will oversee implementation of IT security best practices by the University, including development of policies and procedures, ensuring incorporation of security best practices in IT planning and new development; overseeing security remediation activity; providing expertise and guidance for decision-making; and ensuring incorporation of security best practices in the operational activities of the department. The Manager, Architecture and Planning will: Collaboratively establish and maintain comprehensive IT and enterprise architectures for the University and ensure that projects and designs are sound and consistent with that architecture. Lead the development of a high-level roadmap of projects to guide the transformation of the IT architecture to the desired future state. Support planning and decision-making by the IT team, with architectural consulting, direction and design assistance. Develop and maintain various forms of documentation modeling the IT and enterprise architectures. Maintain an in-depth knowledge of VIU's strategic and functional plans, ensuring that the architecture reflects them and supports their evolution where appropriate. Support all IT planning processes including development of an annual IT plan in consultation with the CTO. Maintain a portfolio of VIU investments in IT applications and infrastructure identifying key metrics such as lifecycle stage, operating costs, value to the university and associated risks. Oversee implementation and on-going administration of IT security for VIU, including managing a dedicated security analyst.
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in computer science or related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; experience including:
- 10+ years of experience progressively advancing experience in IT technical roles;
- 5+ years of experience in management roles; and
- 3+ years hands-on design and planning experience addressing large scale integration challenges.
As well, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of the unique business drivers including problems, opportunities and constraints associated with systems and processes supporting the delivery of higher education; experience documenting architectural design plans and technology roadmaps; demonstrated ability to facilitate and develop annual functional levels plans; proven ability to build, manage and foster a team-oriented environment; desire and ability to work collaboratively with VIU Business stakeholders, other managers in an information technology/systems environment, peer Universities, vendors, and contracted resources; and proven ability to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment.
Excellent communication (written and oral); interpersonal skills that are effective with senior business and academic leaders, line management, and technical resources; as well as excellent leadership and management skills are also required.
