Job Summary: 

Reporting to the Manager Technical Services, the Application and Database Administrator provides a variety of services to ensure the reliability, functionality, administration and performance of the Corporation’s databases and application environment.  This includes creating, maintaining and supporting all databases along with designing, creating and ensuring the structural integrity of all database objects.  In conjunction with the Manager Technical Services, administers and support BC Transit’s computing environment to ensure the efficient operation, functionality and availability of the computer network and critical business applications.  Evaluates and makes recommendations to the Manager Technical Services on current and future software and hardware requirements, as well as develops proposals for, and implements, approved system enhancements.  Assists the Manager Technical Services in developing strategic plans for utilization of application, database and web environments.


  • Provides a variety of services to ensure the reliability, functionality, administration and performance of the Corporation’s databases, application and web environment, such as:
  • Creating, maintaining and supporting all databases and applications as required for development, testing, training/education and production usage to ensure maximum availability;
  • Designing, creating and ensuring structural integrity of all database objects, including tables, views, indexes, sequences, etc. from approved information given by application developers or vendors of purchased systems;
  • Providing support to BC Transit’s enterprise application suites (JD Edwards, ePersonality, Giro, Trapeze, Hastus, etc.);
  • Providing user and technical support as required;
  • Plan and implement backup and recovery procedures of the databases and applications;
  • Monitoring and optimizing the performance of the databases and offering assistance to developers and users to best utilize their applications, respond to queries, etc.;
  • Implementing and enforcing security for all of BC Transit’s approved and supported databases and applications;
  • Provide support on upgrades, user acceptance testing, bug fixes, gap analysis, impact analysis, system analysis, etc.
  • Manage all upgrades, patches and bug fixes for database and applications; including user acceptance testing, Change and Release management and documentation
  • Evaluate, recommend and plan for new products or releases, in conjunction with the corporation to ensure minimal impact;
  • Ensuring BC Transit is in compliance with database and application licensing agreements;
  • Liaising between BC Transit and third party vendors or contractors for technical support, upgrades, bug fixes, etc. as necessary;
  • Implementing standards to ensure that all application design and code is produced with proper integrity, security and performance, including performing reviews on the design and code frequently to ensure adherence to the site standards;
  • Provide information and assistance in accessing database objects by other applications and tools (e.g. SQL, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, etc.).
  • Assisting System Administration support required in heterogeneous platforms such as Solaris, and Linux
  • Remains current on industry developments and new technologies
  • Performs other related duties as assigned


  • Degree in Computer Science, Business or related field or equivalent experience


  • 3 – 5 years of  experience maintaining and providing support for Sun/Unix  and Linux environments
  • 3 - 5 years’ experience in information technology and diverse technological environments, data and process analysis and modeling, logical database design, physical database design and implementation
  • 5+ years’ experience with performance tuning and trouble-shooting skills
  • Expert knowledge of Oracle 9i, 10g, 11g
  • Expert knowledge of Oracle security
  • Expert knowledge of RMAN backups
  • Knowledge of Oracle Application Servers
  • Prior experience and strong skills in, SQL Scripting and Shell Scripting
  • Experience with SQL Server
  • Experience with NFS
  • Expertise in backup and recovery and fail-over methods and best practices
  • Knowledge of JD Edwards, Trapeze, Hastus, ePersonality an asset
  • Experience with Business Intelligence tools such as Oracle Discoverer, Crystal Reports, JD Edwards Report Writer, Insight, and SoFi Reports
