AbeBooks, an Amazon company, is seeking a talented, self-directed Software Development Manager to lead the team responsible for building and operating our search systems. This is at the heart of what we do and allows customers to explore hundreds of millions of listing that are updated tens of millions of times a day by sellers from around the world.   • Becoming a domain expert for your team′s products, features and technology
  • Hiring, developing, and motivating a great engineering team
  • Contributing to the technical vision, strategy, and product roadmap for your team
  • Recognizing and removing technical, organizational and project roadblocks for your team
  • Proposing and implementing new features and system improvements
  • Developing relationships within AbeBooks and Amazon to support your team′s activities
  • Prioritizing the work of your team, and building product timelines and roadmaps

  • 5+ years experience in Software development
  • 2+ years as a Development Manager or Team Lead
  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent
  • Demonstrated passion for customer experience and usability
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated technical leadership
  • Experience in the development and architecture of distributed/scalable/fault tolerant systems
  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, results driven environment
  • Familiar with Linux (Or Unix) environment
  • Experience in testing and a passion for producing high quality code
  • Understanding of relational databases, relational modeling and SQL (Oracle/MySQL)
  • Agile practices and methodologies such as Test Driven Development and Scrum
  • An understanding of OO design patterns and programming
  • Proficiency with client side technologies and best practices (XHTML/JavaScript/CSS)
