Job Summary: 

xMatters is hiring an QA Engineer who has a proven track record delivering and testing performant, scalable and resilient services. In this role, you will be involved with testing operational projects like deployment automation, rate limiting, security management, emergency response, component failover, etc. This position requires cross-team collaboration and communication - you'll work with other engineers and product managers to deliver secure, highly-available, mission-critical systems with a strong emphasis on site reliability. The ideal candidate will be passionate about implementing and testing sound solutions for infrastructure implementations, manual task work and pushing the limits on automating service reliability using software and agile engineering principles.

Your Responsibilities

  • Reviewing requirements/user stories for the purpose of identifying and closing gaps
  • Participating in planning poker sessions and shirt sizing
  • Designing, maintaining, and executing functional manual/automated/load test cases
  • Reviewing test cases and test scenarios with the operations engineering team
  • Work with Operations Engineers to design and identify test plans, including implementation
  • Testing operational aspects of user stories such as deployment automation, failover, rate limiting, monitoring hooks, etc
  • Testing deployment of system and software changes to production in a consistent and repeatable fashion
  • Prioritizing testing tasks based on project goals and risks, and ensuring that testing milestones, activities and tasks are completed as scheduled
  • Reporting the status of test planning, defects and execution activities, including regular status updates using quality metrics
  • Gathering and reporting key metrics at the end of each test run
  • Creating and maintaining data test beds
  • Ensuring proper management of test and staging environments
  • Monitoring testing to assess progress and communicate risks with stakeholders
  • Assessing development scope changes and communicating their impact on testing (timeline/cost/risk)
  • Fostering an environment that encourages productivity, innovative teamwork and a high level of professionalism

Your Education, Experience and Skill Sets

  • A degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Experience designing, creating and executing manual functional test cases and automated functional test scripts
  • Strong experience with a high level language (e.g. Python, Ruby, Java)
  • Strong scripting skills (e.g. Bash)
  • Experience with *nix systems
  • Experience with automation frameworks such as Fabric
  • Experience with writing automation tests using Python or other programming language
  • Experience with performance/load/SOAK tests
  • Experience with test driven development and unit testing
  • Understanding of regression testing and risk based testing
  • Perform gap analysis of requirements
  • Knowledge of software development lifecycle
  • Understanding of the defect life cycle and the issues related to defect reporting
  • A willingness to contribute ideas to testing methods and tool selection
