Job Summary: 

Position: Systems Administrator

Location: Information Technology/School Board Office

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year

Status: Continuing

Pay Rate: $23.48 per hour (This position is subject to rating by the Job Evaluation Committee)

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Information Technology, the incumbent performs operational-level programming, systems analysis and Linux/UNIX development functions for application systems and portions of moderately complex or complex systems.


  • Analyzes and develops design specifications for software applications, including but not limited to Student Information Systems and associated programs
  • Writes, modifies, integrates and tests software programs and web pages
  • Maintains existing software by making modifications as required
  • Supports and maintains district Linux diskless client image
  • Supports and maintains district Linux servers including updates, back-ups and security patches
  • Supports district directory services, district web pages, district Linux image, district Linux automation systems, district wireless and communication systems
  • Provides instruction and training to users and other employees on day-to-day procedures
  • Assists and advises in the assurance of completeness of user requirements
  • Assists and advises in the development of logical and physical system specifications
  • Researches and evaluates a variety of software development approaches
  • Prepares reports, manuals and other documentation on the status, operation and maintenance of software and applications

  • Recent Bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering with 4 years recent experience or a combination of education and experience relating to the position
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Thorough working knowledge and experience with current programming languages and systems including, but not limited to: SQL, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, PHP, C/C++, Java, Python, Shell, Perl and Ruby
  • Thorough working experience installing, configuring and maintaining Linux/UNIX servers
  • Proficient in all aspects of software development and associated processes including security and district networks
  • Thorough working knowledge of LDAP and openLDAP directory services
  • Thorough working knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP, ICMP, ARP, etc.) and commonly used services (DHCP, DNS, HTTP, etc.)
  • Thorough working knowledge of Linux automation software; i.e. Puppet
  • Ability to support district learning management systems for all back-end support such as security updates, software updates and theming; i.e. Moodle
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated effective planning, prioritizing, project management and troubleshooting skills
  • Demonstrated effective organizational, written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Valid B.C. Driver's License

Desirable Skills

  • Dedication to learning and working with diverse technologies and multiple application systems
  • Working knowledge of package maintenance for Debian/Ubuntu
