The Job

KANO/APPS is looking for a passionate and analytical Software Development / Technical Lead to join our team in Victoria, BC.

As the Software Development / Technical Lead, you will work with our team of talented developers, designers and artists to build and ship large-scale / high-availability social and mobile games to millions of players worldwide.

We are looking for a skilled and talented individual to bring expertise and relevant experiences to elevate and lead our development team. As such, you must love solving difficult problems and providing technical and managerial leadership to others. As part of our team, continuous learning will be expected and you will play a direct role in helping to shape our culture and product offerings.

In this role, the buck stops at you and the expectations are high. You will troubleshoot, design, and architect large-scale frameworks and systems to plan and ensure the uptime of our games and tools in a high-traffic, high-growth web environment.

Duties and Challenges

  • Split time between management responsibilities and writing code
  • Work in the trenches with talented developers on challenging problems
  • Design, build, and release high quality software to our players
  • Mentor and manage our development team
  • Help define our technical strategy as we build next generation desktop and mobile products
  • Iterate through agile methodologies, creating hypotheses and testing them with incremental code pushes and continuous integration
  • Shape our dev culture by improving our processes and codebases


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of RECENT agile software development experience (strong understanding of OOP) with live-deployed, high-scale, high-availability, consumer-focused systems in production environments
  • 3+ years designing, querying, optimizing and scaling MySQL and/or noSQL databases
  • Expert experience with REST, JSON, AJAX, CSS
  • Detailed knowledge of development tools and techniques relating to HTML5 web technologies and web services integration
  • Strong track record of shipping projects on time
  • Attention to detail, meticulous and organized working habits
  • Strong understanding of developing products to satisfy business objectives
  • Expert knowledge of standard software engineering and quality assurance practices
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with third parties when needed
  • Strong problem solving, debugging, troubleshooting, documentation and delegation abilities
  • Passionate for software development and relentless, exhaustive problem solving
  • Experience managing, leading and mentoring developers

Nice to Have

  • Facebook API and/or iOS/Android development experience
  • Experience with deploying and managing AWS farms
  • jQuery and familiarity with other JavaScript frameworks
  • Experience with PHP, Node.js, MySQL, Memcached, MongoDB
  • Live JavaScript/HTML5 games
