Job Summary: 

This position is based at our headquarters in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, reporting to the Manager, Merchandising. We also have an office in Dusseldorf, Germany. From these two locations we run seven international web sites: AbeBooks.com, AbeBooks.co.uk, AbeBooks.de, AbeBooks.fr, AbeBooks.it, IberLibro.com and ZVAB.com.

This is a temporary position for a period of 12 months, available from October 1, 2015.

The content marketing specialist will be specifically responsible for developing and managing content to support merchandising, brand, social media and PR campaigns on AbeBooks.com and AbeBooks.co.uk.

Displaying a keen interest in books and our community of bibliophiles, you will manage on-site content, social media and our blogs on a daily basis. You will develop compelling stories for journalists, bloggers and video bloggers to raise awareness of our online marketplace, and develop relationships with key partners such as a booksellers, book fairs and bookselling associations to ensure AbeBooks is closely associated with rare and collectible books in English speaking countries.

You will champion books, booksellers and booklovers, as well as the AbeBooks brand.

The role involves:

  • Telling compelling stories about books, booksellers and booklovers that clearly resonate with our target customers and the relevant media.
  • Working closely with other members of the marketing department to produce and implement campaigns that are distributed across a variety of paid and earned channels
  • Testing different approaches to content and merchandising distributed on-site.
  • Understanding the key business driver for your content (for example, sales trends, social engagement, bounce rate, click-through, conversion)
  • Developing and executing merchandising approaches for different customer groups. Creating strong content for on-site, email, blog and social media merchandising, including irresistible call-to-actions.
  • Creating and editing content pages using Dreamweaver, Photoshop &WordPress.
  • Providing proof-reading and quality assurance on all types of content.
  • Understanding the benefits and limitations of the AbeBooks marketplace.

Key responsibilities are:

  • You create revenue-driving and brand-related content for our website, social media and/or email channel: relevant, timely, on-brand, and targeted to the right audience. You ensure that merchandising pages and/or emails are thorough, accurate, up-to-date, and engaging.
  • You need a love for detail, and a keen eye for identifying errors.
  • You understand the needs of the various AbeBooks customers in general, and you approach projects and solve problems from a customer-centered perspective. You propose new service offers to our customers - especially in the Rare & Collectible area.
  • You are knowledgeable and curious about the books and book-related items for sale on AbeBooks, about our booksellers and their Rare & Collectible inventory. You understand the full range of merchandising vehicles available to you.

Candidate's profile should include the following characteristics:

  • Experience in writing engaging content.
  • HTML coding and image editing experience.
  • A strong appreciation of powerful images and compelling video content.
  • Ability to think both strategically and tactically.
  • Commitment to providing a world-class customer experience.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Experience with web analytics tools.
  • Ecommerce experience.
  • Knowledge of books (particularly rare books), bookselling, authors and publishing.
  • Experience in delivering engaging blog, social media and video content on behalf of a business or organization.
  • Video production experience.
